Hong Kong Cultures, Arts and Languages (HKCAL) is an international research network based in Northern England, committed to promoting the study and preservation of Hong Kong’s rich cultural heritage. Through innovative digital methods, HKCAL advances the investigation, documentation, and archiving of Hong Kong’s diverse cultural expressions, languages, and arts.
Our mission is to foster scholarly collaboration across disciplines and geographies, and to serve as a bridge between communities interested in Hong Kong’s evolving cultural landscape, both in the UK and around the world.
Our Work
At HKCAL, we focus on:
- Research: Advancing studies of Hong Kong’s cultures, arts, and languages with a strong emphasis on digital humanities approaches.
- Preservation: Using technology to document and safeguard cultural artefacts and practices.
- Outreach: Building a dynamic community through workshops, conferences, and training initiatives.
- Archiving: Creating and maintaining digital records of research and cultural materials for future generations.
Our Platform
This website (hkcal.org) is our digital home a hub for sharing news, research outputs, event updates, and resources. It also serves as an archive of our previous conferences and workshops, ensuring that the insights and discussions generated through our activities are accessible to all.
Annual Workshops and Conferences
HKCAL organises annual or biennial workshops and conferences, providing forums for intellectual exchange, research presentations, and professional training. These gatherings are key opportunities to explore new methodologies, particularly in the digital humanities, and to strengthen collaborations among scholars, artists, and cultural practitioners.
Through these events, we also offer training sessions designed to equip researchers with cutting-edge digital tools for the study and preservation of Hong Kong’s cultural heritage.
Our International Network Collaborator
Our international collaborators contribute to diverse regional and disciplinary perspectives to the study of Hong Kong in global contexts. These collaborators represent key voices in broader conversations on language, identity, and cultural expressions across cultural and linguistic spaces.
